The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place May 18, 2022, in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

Outdoor Adventure Day Camp enjoyed by many

LOTS OF FISH were caught by this group at the Outdoor Adventure Day Camp held on Monday, June 6, at the Rooks State Fishing Lake, with Jake Brooke, Graham and Rooks County Game Warden, and Chris Hanson, Kansas Forest Service, sharing their expertise with the youth. The youth enjoyed playing games, such as cornhole, washers, horseshoes, and parachute.

The deadline to sign up for the Primary Election was 12:00 noon on Wednesday, June 1st at the Rooks County Clerk’s Office. Those running for an open position in the upcoming election in August are as follows: Rooks County Commissioner District #1: Alan Green (Rep.), Stockton; and Kayla Hilbrink (Rep.), Stockton.

Art club hosts two events

The Western Plains Painters, formerly known as the Palco Art Club, recently hosted two events to introduce their new name change and continue their mission of inspiring and instructing local artists. An oil/pastel landscape workshop was led by renowned artist Kim Casebeer of Manhattan, on June 2-4 at Sternberg Museum in Hays.

Commissioners meet with several department heads

The Rooks County Commissioners met with sheriff Gary Knight at their May 31st weekly meeting to review the bids for the new security system for the jail. The only bid Knight received was from INA Alert. After reviewing the cost of the equipment, which includes security cameras, access controls, computers, etc., the commissioners would like to see a breakdown in the costs of the equipment. A representative from the company will be at the next meeting to go over the costs.
