Governor Laura Kelly ceremonially signed bipartisan House Bill 2239 Monday, May 23rd, which provides sales and property tax relief to Kansans impacted by natural disasters. The measure includes a sales tax exemption for agricultural fencing and empowers county commissions to abate property taxes when the governor has declared a disaster and properties or homesteads have been damaged.

KHP participating in annual Memorial Day STEP campaign

The peak of summer travel across our nation’s highways is about to begin. The Kansas Highway Patrol began working additional hours on May 22nd and will continue to through June 2nd. This additional coverage comes thanks to funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation through the STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program) campaign, to help motorists reach their destinations safely.

Commissioners meet with road and bridge supervisor

At the regular weekly meeting of the Rooks County Commission, commissioners Tim Berland, Greg Balthazor and John Ruder met with road and bridge supervisor Rich Bouchey. Bouchey started out his report by stating that the work at 10 Road and K-18 has been completed. The crew is working by Bow Creek at 11 and A Roads, and are also hauling rock on 28 Road. The new water truck is in the shop so that the radio can be installed. It will have a tank liner installed the first part of June. Bouchey also reported that there are two graders still in Concordia for repairs and the oil distributor is still in Topeka.

Special school board meeting held

A special meeting of the Stockton Unified School District No. 271 Board of Education was held Wednesday, May 11th, 2022, in the District Conference Room, at 7:30 p.m. with the following present: school board members Jesse Stithem, Mark Billinger, Stephanie Niblock, Chad Sterling, LeAnn Dix (via phone), BJ Hoeting, Aftan Tso and superintendent Bill Lowry.

Commissioners approve board appointments

Items for discussion and review, which were listed under New Business during the Stockton City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, May 17th started off with the commissioners reviewing the three different audit proposals for the City. It was decided to accept the audit proposal from Adam Brown.

Memorial Day activities planned

The Monroe-Taylor-Barnes V.F.W. Post 8873 in Stockton encourages all veterans (members and non-members) and Auxiliary members to fall out on Memorial Day, May 30th. Veterans are to meet at the Post Home at 8:30 a.m. for services. Veterans, if you are unable to wear your uniform, please fall out in black slacks, white shirt, black tie, and service or V.F.W. cap.

Due to the steady decline in the attendance of the annual Stockton High School Alumni Banquet over the past few years, as well as many classes opting to hold their own reunions, the annual alumni banquet will not be held this Memorial Day Weekend.
