Fire call to Rooks County Landfill

The Stockton Fire Department was called out at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 30th to the Rooks County Landfill. After the County employees dug out the debris from the pit, the volunteers worked for approximately 45 minutes at the scene. No definite cause of the fire was determined.

Area wheat harvest update

As of Monday, July 11th, a few farmers are still out in the fields cutting, so that means the area wheat harvest is almost ready to have the books closed for this year. The Stockton Farmers Union Elevator reports 337,000 bushels taken in, with Woodston Coop having a total of 361,000 bushels for this year’s crop.

Game Wardens target impaired boaters over July 4th Weekend

Game wardens with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) spent the July 4th holiday weekend participating in Operation Dry Water—a nationwide law enforcement effort to prevent boating under the influence (BUI). Game wardens patrolled Kansas lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, targeting impaired boat operators and safety violations to keep Kansans safe while recreating on the water.

James and Ann Ochampaugh to celebrate 60 years of marriage

The Ochampaugh family, children and grandchildren would like to invite family and friends to come celebrate the 60th anniversary of James and Ann Ochampaugh. The Come-and-Go card reception with refreshments will be held on Sunday afternoon, July 24th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Plainville.

Commissioners hold short business meeting before working on 2023 budget

The Rooks County Commissioners conducted a short business session on Tuesday, June 28th at their regular meeting before they turned their attention to working on the 2023 county budgets. The first order of business was the weekly reports with commissioners John Ruder reporting on the building in Plainville. At this time the County is waiting on the state statutes about a special tax sale with the county attorney working on what can be done and how they can proceed.

Political signs not allowed on highway right of way

It’s a sign of the season— political campaigning and the posting of campaign signs. The Kansas Department of Transportation reminds the public that all political campaign signs or billboards are prohibited from being placed on state right of way.

School Board approves supplemental contracts and resignation at special meeting

A special USD 271 School Board meeting was held on Monday, June 27 with the board members first recognizing superintendent Bill Lowry with a plaque for his years of service to the District. Then the Board reviewed the year-end budget as presented by Lowry, approving it and allowing the superintendent and clerk to move forward with year-end purchases and transfers as allowed by law.
