“Axe the Food Tax” Bill will completely eliminate the state’s sales tax on groceries by 2025 On Wednesday, May 11, Governor Laura Kelly signed bipartisan legislation, House Bill 2106, that will “Axe the Food Tax,” eliminating the state sales tax on groceries. Cutting the food tax will provide Kansans with much-needed fiscal relief, especially as costs continue to rise.

For many years, people knew spring had arrived in Stockton when they heard the sound of Darrell Small’s mower start up signaling the beginning of the lawnmowing season. For over twelve years Darrell mowed hundreds of lawns for his customers from April through November, starting in the early morning until the jobs scheduled for that day were done.

Students do well at Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge

The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge, a statewide student entrepreneurship competition featuring 61 high school and eight community college teams from across Kansas, took place Thursday, April 28th, at Kansas State University. This year’s competition featured two businesses from Rooks County: Taylor Ayers’ “Ayers Buddies Pet Sitting,” and Bryan Garvert, “Intricates,” both of Plainville.

School Board accepts another teacher resignation

During the Stockton USD 271 School Board meeting held on Monday, May 9th, the board members voted to accept the resignation of teacher Heather Stamper-Voss at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, as well as the resignations of Dwight Miller as bus driver, Adrianne Holmes as junior class sponsor, Justin Basart as freshman sponsor and Rebecca Gray as school play director. They also moved to contract Amy Jackson as custodian effective immediately.

Angela Coble to be sworn in as Kansas Court of Appeals judge May 17th

Angela Coble will be sworn in as judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, before an invited audience in the Supreme Court courtroom in the Kansas Judicial Center, Topeka.

Chief Judge Arnold-Burger, Kansas Court of Appeals, will preside over the ceremony. Coble will be introduced by retired U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen M. Humphreys and  sitting U.S. Magistrate Judge Gwynne E. Birzer.

SHS 127th Graduation held May 7th

The 127th graduation of Stockton High School was held on Saturday, May 7th at 3:00 p.m. in the high school gym. After the young men and women walked into the room for the last time as a class, superintendent Bill Lowry gave the Welcome to everyone assembled.
