County talks pay scale for road and bridge department

Body
At the weekly meeting of the Rooks County Commission held on Tuesday, September 27th, road and bridge office manager Sadie Look was at the meeting to present the commissioners with spreadsheets on starting wages and benefits from the surrounding counties dealing with their road and bridge departments so they can compare them to Rooks County. It was noted that some of the other counties also are on a four-day workweek schedule. After reviewing the information the commissioners talked about different ideas on how Rooks County can be more competitive and will move forward with their thoughts when they visit with road and bridge supervisor Rich Bouchey.

CUTTING.Ifyou'veever run a chainsaw, you know what I'm talking about. All it takes is one slip or one slight misjudgment and, whoops, you hit dirt. Grrr. Just that quick and your chain is dull. And it's time to pull out your sharpener, again. My how different is the Word of God! It never gets dull; never loses its sharpness. In fact, God's Word specializes in hitting the 'dirt' of our sin to cut it out of our lives. God led the writer of the book of Hebrews to say, 'For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword' (4:12). Are you thankful that God made His Word sharp? After Peter proclaimed God's truth concerning Jesus on the Day of Pentecost in the Book of Acts, the people 'were cut to the heart' (2:37). What was the result? 'So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls' (2:41). God's Word cut open the hearts of these people, they realized their utter sinfulness, and they trusted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Their lives were eternally transformed! However, in Acts 7, after Stephen proclaimed God's truth at length to the high priest and other Jewish leaders, 'they were cut to the heart' (v. 54) and stoned him to death. God's Word surgically laid bare their sin, but they rejected the truth, clung to their sin, and in unbelief refused to trust the Lord Jesus. It's God's deep love for humanity that led Him to give His Word to be a scalpel to cut away the dirt of sin. God's love led Peter to write that He is 'not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance' (2 Pet. 3:9). And His love led Paul to tell Timothy that God 'desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth' (2 Tim. 2:4). Thankfully, God's love is still toward humanity and His Word is still sharp and cutting. Some respond with humble faith. Others respond with prideful rejection and unbelief. And you?

I wrote this column in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in April of 2020, before we all had quarantine/ corona fatigue, in the first month of our separation from family and friends. I thought I would include it without editing, as its message is great for today: let’s remember that laughter, love and serving one another are our most important contributions to humankind.
