YOM KIPPUR, or the Jewish Day of Atonement, was observed on October 4th and 5th (evening to evening). It's the most holy day in Judaism when Jews confess their sins committed over the past year. It originally involved sacrifices for sin by the High Priest (see Leviticus 16). In short, the High Priest first washed himself and put on holy garments. He then killed a bull and sprinkled its blood on the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies to atone for his own sin. IOW, the High Priest must be 'sinless.' Thew High Priest would also choose two goats. One goat he killed and took its blood into the Holy of Holies to atone for the sin of the people. The other goat became a 'scapegoat.' Placing his hands on the goat's head, he confessed Israel's sins. The goat was then led into the wilderness and set free, thus indicating God considered their sin to be carried away never to be remembered again. It seems so foreign to us today, but it was a big deal for ancient Israelites. Sadly, most of them missed the real teaching. All of this was but a picture of the final Yom Kippur— the day the Lord Jesus Christ made atonement for sin on the cross of Calvary. Jesus was the sinless High Priest who was 'holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners' (Heb. 7:26). He needed no personal washing or bull's blood to cleanse His sin in God's sight. Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb of God who, not 'with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all' by which He made atonement for sin possible (Heb. 9:12). And Jesus was the 'scapegoat.' John the Baptist declared in John 1:29, 'Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!' Jesus made Yom Kippur obsolete. His sacrifice was once for all time. The only question is if He truly is our sinless High Priest, sin offering, and scapegoat. How precious it is for true Christians to know our sin is under the blood of God's Lamb!

“If it is remarkable, it is trademarkable.” This is a phrase that may seem more inclined to be describing a potential business product or a service. However, in the second part of his message “Go Make Disciples,” Fred Miller described God’s trademarkable love. It is a love for us that is remarkable indeed.

IT TAKES WORK. That's true of most things in life. And it's certainly true when it comes to the Bible. If you want to understand the truth of what God says in His Word, it takes work. That's especially true since it's difficult to condense the full meaning of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek into English. Plus some English Bibles just wrongly translate the intended meaning. For example, one Bible translates Exodus 21:22 as 'When men have a fight and hurt a pregnant woman, so that she suffers a miscarriage, but no further injury, the guilty one shall be fined....' At face value, it appears that a miscarriage, and therefore an abortion, is no big deal. Just pay a fine. What is the real meaning? The Hebrew word translated 'miscarriage' simply means 'to go out' or 'to come out.' Exodus 21:2, says, 'If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years; and in the seventh he shall go out free and pay nothing.' After 6 years, the servant can 'go out, leave, depart.' Pretty simple, though it takes work to look it up. Rather than 'miscarriage,' the meaning is actually that if the woman gives birth prematurely, i.e. the baby comes out, and is not harmed, then the man responsible pays a fine. However, Exodus 21:23 says, 'But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life.' If the baby dies, then it's 'a life for a life.' IOW, God says a 'fetus' coming out prematurely is a 'life' and if a person causes its 'abortion,' he is guilty of murder and should be put to death. In 2 Timothy 2:15, Paul told Timothy, 'Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.' Rightly understanding the truth takes diligent work. Jesus said, 'If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed, and the truth shall make you free.' (John 8:31). True disciples abide in God's Word. That takes effort! But it sets one free from error. So, don't be ashamed! Work!

Most all Christians are aware of the Great Commission given in Matthew 28: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” In short, we are to share the gospel effectively so others can come to know Jesus.
