VENOM. Jeremy and Jennifer bought a fixer- upper on Lake Corpus Cristi in Texas. It was mid-morning in May 2018. Jeremy was mowing. His wife was in the garden and as she reached down to pull a weed, there it was—a 3-foot rattlesnake—right next to her hand. 'Snake!' rang out as she backed away. Jeremy grabbed a shovel and hurried to his wife. Then he heard the rattle. He raised the shovel bringing the edge down behind the rattler's head. Whew! Close call. About 10 minutes later Jeremy went back and when he reached down to grab a stick to dispose of it, the snake bit deep into his hand. His wife, a nurse who understood the danger, got him into their car and sped away to the closest hospital— 30 minutes away. As the venom dropped his blood pressure, he blacked out. An ambulance met them and sped off with him, but with his blood pressure dropping, they called for a helicopter. In the end, whereas most rattler victims receive two to four antivenom doses, Jeremy needed 26. He spent about 5 weeks in the hospital— coma, body swelling, dialysis, extreme pain, barely surviving. But he did survive and recover though losing two fingers. The serpent did its best to cause death but the physicians and the right treatments won the day. Spiritually speaking, Satan is 'that serpent of old' (Rev. 12:9) who was 'a murderer from the beginning' (John 8:44). Though Satan bit Jesus' heel (Gen. 3:15) resulting in His human death, yet Jesus came so that 'through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil' (Heb. 2:14). Jesus Himself said, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance' (Mark 2:17). Satan injected his venom into us all. We're all sinners and face eternal death. But the Great Physician shed His blood as the only anti-venom that can win the day. Have you received the antivenom by trusting Jesus?
