This is being written on Saturday, July 4, so I hope everyone is celebrating safely on this momentous 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. There were 56 signatures, and it wasn’t until 1870 that the U.S. Congress made July 4th a holiday in Washington, D.C.
