Two Rooks County Men Elected to Kansas Commodity Commissions

Two Rooks County farmers have been elected to Kansas commodity commissions following elections administered by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Matthew Benoit and Michael McClellan were each elected to represent District IV on their respective commissions.

Rooks County Senior Center Menus

The menus for the Senior Centers in Rooks County for the week beginning Monday, March 23, are as follows: Monday—Chicken strips, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread, tropical fruit. Tuesday— Hamburger patty with lettuce, onion, and tomato, macaroni salad, bun, applesauce. Wednesday—Chicken and rice casserole, brussel sprouts, bread, peaches, cookie. Thursday—Beef pot roast in gravy, mashed potatoes, seasoned carrots, bread, strawberries and bananas. Friday—Baked fish, macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables, mandarin oranges.

The Council of the City of Woodston met in the Council Chamber at the City Hall on Monday, February 9th, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. Mayor Kenny Lay called the meeting to order with council members Kate Terry, Thomas Yakish, Bill Dibble, Charles O’Neill, and Larry Morgan present.

Crossroads Quilt Guild

The Crossroads Quilt Guild meeting was called to order on Monday, February 16th, with refreshments provided by everyone (potluck). Eleven members answered Roll Call. The motion was made by Linda and seconded by Janie, and carried. The Treasurer's Report was given. Susan made a motion to accept the report, which Betty seconded. The motion carried. Old Business was discussed that we make a quilt to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The ladies involved are Betty Bedore, who did the piecing, Connie Haselhorst, who did the embroidery, and Diane Maddy, who quilted. The panel was donated by Paradise Flats Quilt Company. Discussion was held about raffling tickets at the Car Shows in Plainville and Stockton, and the Rodeo, and possibly Paradise Creek, with the quilt display in different locations, including at the Fair. It was decided to ask for $2.00 per ticket and $6.00 for five tickets. Tickets will be made along with some flyers.

Twins Celebrate 81st Birthday

Twins Cheryll Mertz, of Minneapolis, Kansas, and Darrell Rubottom, of rural Woodston, celebrated their 81st birthday two days early with a small family gathering on Saturday, March 14, at the Osborne Public Library Community Room. The event was planned by Cheryll’s son, Mark Mertz, and his wife, Gail, of Pampa, Texas. The twins grew up on the family farm south of Woodston, where Darrell and his wife Avonne continue to reside.

Stockton Fire Department responds to multiple calls in March

The Stockton Fire Department has had a busy March, responding to a series of calls across the area. The first came on Monday, March 2nd, at 10:32 a.m., at the residence of Chad and Nancy Sterling. A grass fire ignited while iron was being cut on the property. By the time crews arrived, the homeowners had already extinguished the flames with a garden hose, though volunteers remained on scene for 20 to 30 minutes to mop up the area.
