A 20% chance of thunderstorms during the weekend turned into a ferocious storm in the Stockton and Woodston areas on Saturday night— heavy rain and hail, with the bulk coming in during an hour-and-a-half stretch. Tornado sirens were blown as some rotation was noted, but no funnels formed. Rainfall totals were recorded at seven and a half inches. In that Sunday morning’s early hours, the floodwaters were over six feet deep in Tiger Stadium.

The Rooks County Relay For Life was held at the Plainville football field to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The preliminary totals showed that over $14,000.00 had been raised, with the Basket Auction bringing in service later in the month.

To kick off National Nursing Home Week during the first part of May, each resident released a balloon in the air with their names and the Solomon Valley Manor’s address on it. On May 24th, the Ternus family from Humphrey, Nebraska, notified the Manor that they had found Grace Turnbull’s balloon, which had traveled a surprising 248 miles.

An organizational meeting of the Capital Campaign Committee was held for the new Stockton Health Clinic. Dr. Mike Oller and Dr. Beth Loney were interested in starting their rural practice in Stockton, and they had plans to come to the town by the following summer.

SHS graduates Jameson Nyp, Hayley Strutt, Sage Penner, Jordann Wiltfong, and Stephen Moll received the Darrell And Sheila Latham Scholarship for Success Scholarships. The Kansas Legislature was considering the reopening of the Stockton prison.

Approximately 40 people had gathered at Stockton City Hall to visit with Wes Bainter of Bainter Construction of Hoxie about an independent living complex for Stockton. The apartments would have two bedrooms with an attached garage and inside and outside accessibility. There would also be a meeting room for gatherings and a daily meal included in the rent of the all-electric units.

The Stockton VFW named Elvera Beiker of Plainville the Community Volunteer of the Year. J. T. Plummer, Alvy Beck, John Berkley, and Charles Dougherty presented Beiker with a plaque and pin signifying her over 5,000 hours of volunteer services.

The SHS Prom theme was “Between Now & Forever,” with royalty candidates Derek Spires, Janie Gilmore, Scott Voss, Carlee Lindsey, Calvin Dix, and Amber Kriley. There was a small turnout for the two open seats on the Stockton City Commission, with Wayne Madison receiving 83 votes and Kim Thomas receiving 53.
