What Was Going On 14 Years Ago
* And So They Say: Martha Cramer: “I just don’t see how anyone can bowl a 200 game and then in the next game only bowl a 104.” Vernon Sammons: “I didn’t get a pheasant. I didn’t even look for one and it’s for sure they didn’t look for me.” Gene Miller: “When hunting becomes work, it isn’t fun any more.” Robert Osborn: “Our granddaughter still can’t talk and she is over two months old!”
* Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Romeiser received word that their son, Douglas, U. S. Navy stationed on the USS New Orleans, was to sing the National Anthem at the football game’s opening between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints. The men of the New Orleans auditioned for the honor, and Douglas was chosen.
* Coach Bob Becker and his Stockton Tigers had to settle for third place in the Mid-Continent League for the football season after being defeated by the Hill City Ringnecks.
* The Monroe-Taylor- Barnes Post No. 8873 and its Ladies Auxiliary had observed an Open House on Veterans Day to pay homage to the U. S. war dead who had given their lives for this nation. The short program consisted of a flag salute by all, a tribute to the departed comrades by Myrna Kincaid, followed by everyone singing “America the Beautiful.”
* Richard Pinnick of Osborne was acting as a temporary manager at the Quenzer Store until a regular manager could be secured. Richard had been an employee of Quenzers for over 16 years.
* Three more of the eleven victims of the automobile accident on October 15th had been released from the hospital, leaving only seven still hospitalized. Mrs. Edgar Gaines and the two children were brought to Stockton and were houseguests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bates.
* Eighty-four garments were to be modeled and judged in the Make It Yourself with Wool Competition at Phillipsburg. The two entries from Rooks County were Janice Hunt and Donna Knight.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Our resolution to do our Christmas shopping early this year has a few more days to go before it is broken.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Miss Jean Grover and Robert L. Lindsey had been married on November 6th. The H and H Market was advertising sirloin steak for 39¢ a pound.
* Miss Tammy Roskilly had supper guests at her parents’ home, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Roskilly, to honor her tenth birth anniversary. Her guests were Dena and Jeri Bennett, Steve and Linda Farr, Verna Johnson, and Dennis Kreller.
* Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Sander had guests Mrs. Chet Baxter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Reid Baxter and Rudy, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Sander, George Sander, Mrs. Annabel Morton, and Miss Pearl Slightam at their home to celebrate the first birth anniversary of their son, Doug.
* On sale at Webster’s Supermarket were a dozen Bestyet sugar donuts for 23¢ a package, Vista-pak saltine crackers for 19¢ a pound box, seven cans of Campbell’s chicken noodle, vegetable, and beans with bacon soups for $1.00, and rump roasts for 87¢ a pound.
* Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Valley of the Dolls,” starring Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, Susan Hayward, Lee Grant, Paul Burke, and Tony Scott.
