COMPASSION. Many people need it. And the Lord Jesus came to be the King of Compassion. During His 3+ years here on earth, for His disciples, He was primarily a 'Teacher,' and He wanted to teach them to have compassion on people especially. That makes the account of a Gentile Syro-Phoenician woman all the more fascinating. Jesus came to earth to give the Jews an opportunity to trust in Him as their promised Messiah and Savior. That's compassion! Sadly, though all of Israel would have heard of Him and his healings, the vast majority rejected and crucified Him. In Matthew 15 and Mark 7, Jesus actually leaves the land of Israel. This is the only recorded time that He has ever done so. And He took His disciples with Him. This would become a remarkable teaching moment. This woman had a demon-possessed young girl, and typically, that means the demons would have caused her to do life-threatening actions like falling into water or fire. Jesus traveled between 35 and 50 miles into the pagan land of Canaan. Upon arriving, this woman hears of His presence and immediately goes to Him. She persistently begs Jesus to cast out the demon. However, the disciples tire of her, begging Jesus to send her away. What? Where's their compassion? Shouldn't they want to help? This woman was hopelessly needy. Only Jesus could heal her daughter. She was also hugely humble. She bowed at Jesus' feet. She pled with Him, saying, 'Have mercy on me!' Most importantly, she was strong in faith, calling Jesus 'the Son of David.' Somehow, she was a true believer, yet the disciples did not want to help her. How sadly hardhearted! What callousness! But Jesus showed compassion and healed her daughter. What a rebuke to the disciples! But what a great life lesson. We, too, need to look past the 'externals' and realize that multitudes need compassion. The only question is, 'Will we be like the disciples or like the Lord Jesus?'
