NIKE. No, this is not an endorsement of the brand. 'Nike' is the Greek word for 'victory.' In the ancient Roman world, 'Nike' was thesupposedgoddessofvictory. In some cases, victory is by the slimmest amount. The recent Chief's victory over Baltimore ended with the Raven's Isaiah Likely's toe out of bounds by only about a half an inch. That's close! However, this victory is rather meaningless in view of eternity. Will it really matter on judgment day whether the Chiefs won that game? Nope. Eternally far more important is that soul who finds themself on their deathbed with no hope of victory and heaven. Is it ever too late to trust Jesus? Well, in Luke 23, Jesus is a mere 3 hours from dying. He and two criminals are hanging on crosses. Yet, one of the Lord's last acts is forgiving the one who understood that Jesus was Lord and Savior. You might ask,'How do we know this man had true faith and forgiveness just moments before dying?' First of all, he had true fear of and reverence for God. He rebuked the other criminal, saying, 'Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?' (Luke 23:23:40). This man clearly feared God's eternal judgment. Secondly, he admitted his sinfulness. He said, 'And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds' (v. 41). Thirdly, he acknowledged the innocence and sinlessness of the Lord Jesus, saying, 'this Man has done nothing wrong' (v. 41). Lastly, he believed that Jesus was Lord and the promised King to sit on David's throne eternally. He told Jesus, 'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom' (v. 42). Jesus' response? 'I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise' (v. 43) No, it's never too late to win God's forgiveness. All that's necessary is savingly trusting Jesus as did this criminal. 'For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith' (1 John 5:4).
