APPLAUSE. We're prone to 'put our hands together' for all kinds of things - a crazy long game-winning 'nothing but a net shot, a well-played band number, or even an awesome Blue Angels flyover at an airshow. And applause or praise is appropriate at these times. Psalm 47:1-2 says, 'Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.' When it comes to worshiping God, our applause or shouts of praise should be directed Godward because of who He is. He is the Most High. He is awesome, meaning awe-inspiring, and thus deserving of reverence and godly fear. And He is the great King or ruler over all of heaven and earth. Spiritually speaking, He alone deserves our praise. However, in our modern religious environment, there's been a shift to directing applause and praise toward performers rather than toward God. But true worship is to be God-centered. If what pastors, choirs, singers, and musicians do is truly in praise of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, then why do some give them praise through applause? After Peter healed a lame man in Acts 3, the people who saw it ran and gathered around Peter and the man. Peter then tells them, 'Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?' In short, Peter said, 'Don't applaud us. Applaud God who healed the man.' In Acts 10, God sent Peter to a non-Christian Roman centurion named Cornelius. Upon entering his house, Acts 10:25-26 says, '...Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped. But Peter lifted him up, saying, 'Stand up; I myself am also a man.'' In other words, Peter said, 'Don't applaud me. Applaud God!' When John fell at the feet of an angel in Revelation 22, the angel says, 'No, don't worship me. ... Worship only God!' May God alone get our applause and not man!
