TOUGH LOVE. Sometimes, we probably all need it. We really think we know the truth, yet what we believe couldn't be further from actually being true. Whether we like it or not, it's at those times that we need some tough love. In Mark 7, the Lord has been teaching and healing for about two years. Jewish religious leaders have been seeking a reason to kill Him for over a year. And now a group of Pharisees and scribes again leave Jerusalem looking for Jesus to attack Him and his disciples. Upon finding them, they saw Jesus' disciples doing something over thetop- evil. Mark 7:5 says, 'Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, 'Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?' Can you imagine anything more evil than someone eating without first washing their hands? Actually, this was a practice that the Jewish elders had taught for many, many years. In fact, many Jews still today will ceremonially wash their hands before eating bread. Old habits are hard to break. The Lord could have ignored their ignorance, but he loved them too much to let their pride and sin go without correction. He had to give them some tough love. He thus told them, 'Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'' The Pharisees and scribes were convinced that they were righteous in God's eyes because they always washed their hands before eating. Thus, they were convinced that Jesus and his disciples were unrighteous (i.e., wicked sinners). However, God's Word clearly revealed the actual truth. It was the Pharisees and scribes who were sinning against God. Do you know someone who needs some tough love? If so, they deserve that we humbly love with God's love by giving them some tough love.
