Stockton Methodist Church now managing Wiggles and Giggles Daycare

The Stockton Methodist Church has taken over managing the Wiggles and Giggles Daycare located at 511 Main Street. They have been managing it under the previous license for the last four months, and on Monday, September 16th, they received their licenses to continue providing daycare for the Stockton community.
NOW RUNNING UNDER THE NAME, BLESSED BEGINNINGS CENTER, Stockton’s daycare, located at 511 Main Street, is overseen by a 501c3 Board made up of volunteers who are committed to keeping affordable daycare available for the community.

Closed portion of U.S. 281 reopened in Russell County

A portion of U.S. 281 in Russell County has been reopened to traffic as of Wednesday, Sept 18.

The 11-mile section between Land Road and the west K-18 junction has been closed since March for a Kansas Department of Transportation project to reconstruct the roadway into a 30-foot paved surface with 3-foot turf shoulders.

Construction crews will remain in the area to complete the final work and cleanup. Motorists are reminded to buckle up, follow the speed limits, and stay alert while driving.

Topic of District Office relocation presented

During the Board Member Reports during the Stockton USD 271 Board meeting on Tuesday, September 9th, BJ Hoeting brought up the relocation of the District Office into the high school building for consideration. Hoeting stated his reasons deal with financial stewardship to the District via cost savings relating to maintenance, utilities, Internet, telephone, insurance, and other related expenses; the dual role of the superintendent/high school principal efficiencies based on managing one office in one building; and cross training of the District/USD 271 staff to better align and sustain sources.

Stockton’s new business teacher is Nicole Pulec

Nicole Pulec has lived in Stockton her entire life, and with her degrees in business, stepping in as the high school business teacher this year is a perfect fit for her, her family, and the community. Nicole earned two bachelor’s degrees from Fort Hays State University in 1998, one in office management systems and the other in finance. She went back to school and earned her master’s degree in human resource management in 2020.

Receives Smithfield Foods proposal for livestock facility

At the regular meeting on Tuesday, September 10th, the Rooks County Commission received information, which is now posted in the Rooks County Clerk’s Office, regarding the application by Murphy-Brown LLC, doing business as Smithfield Foods, about the construction and operation of a livestock waste facility with a 300+ head boar breeding facility. The facility’s proposed location would be two miles west and one mile north of Plainville.

KDOT announces approved August bids

Body
The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place on Aug. 21, 2024, in Topeka. Some bids may include multiple projects bundled based on proximity and type of work.
