Fort Hays State University to host virtual fall commencement events in December

Body

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Fort Hays State University has decided to convert its traditional, in-person fall commencement ceremony to a series of smaller, college-specific virtual ceremonies. On December 11, 2020, FHSU will host five individual commencement ceremonies for 2020 graduates from each college. The university’s spring 2020 commencement ceremony, originally scheduled for May of this year, was canceled due to the pandemic. This will be an opportunity for spring and summer graduates to participate in commencement.

Body

Rooks County schools have had a decrease in COVID-19 activity this week.  While we have some students who are quarantined at home, we have no known transmission of COVID in our schools. Our decision is based on a continued low level of absenteeism in the schools (only 1.6% above baseline from the 2019-2020 school year), a declining positive testing rate in the county (10.7% over the last two weeks) and a decreasing incidence rate in Rooks County over the last two weeks.

Sign up for the 2020 Parade of Christmas Trees!

Body
The 36th annual Parade of Christmas Trees at the Stockton Public Library is just around the corner, so it is time to start thinking of ideas and getting ready for this very special holiday event. This year, the Stockton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Olde Tyme Christmas theme is “Rudolph & Friends lead you Home for Christmas and to Shop Local,” so you can expand on this for your Christmas tree idea or come up with whatever theme you wish! Either way, the Chamber is asking for the town’s help to make this display a success by having organizations, businesses, classes or individuals decorate a tree.

A Wish Come True

Body
Serenity Carpenter is a beautiful 10-year-old girl with a big smile and a sweet spirit. Serenity, daughter of Michael and Jordan Carpenter, was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis in 2018 and is preparing to begin stem cell transplant treatments at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. This procedure will no doubt be difficult on several levels, not the least of which is that she will need to remain in Kansas City for the next six months.
LAST FRIDAY, OCT. 9, WAS “SERENITY DAY” IN STOCKTON, as Serenity Carpenter was taken on a Scavenger Hunt to find gifts provided by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Serenity wished for technology that will keep her connected with friends and family during her six-month stay in Kansas City. Shown with Serenity are her mother, Jordan Carpenter, and Wish Granters, Kacy Becker (back seat) and Addie Foster.

Though not mandated, county strongly recommends wearing masks

Body
Commission met with the area school superintendents, health officials, law enforcement and other members of the community in a Zoom meeting during their weekly session held on Tuesday, September 29th. The superintendents went over their COVID protocol with the commissioners, noting that they do not want to go to remote learning and want the kids in school as well as how they are working to keep the schools safe and open with the wearing of masks, social distancing, hand washing and cleaning. They asked for guidance on how to get people to wear masks when they are at sporting event, with it noted that the MCL and KSHSAA have a mandate that anyone attending sports events must wear a mask. At this time, the schools have also limited those attending sports events to parents/family. The athletes have a certain amount of tickets they can hand out to people to use to be admitted to the events.
