Stockton High School graduate Angela (Chesney) Coble of Salina is one of three nominees chosen to fill the vacancy created by the Supreme Court appointment of Melissa Taylor Standridge. Governor Laura Kelly will appoint one nominee to fill the vacancy and will submit that appointee for Senate consent during the 2021 legislative session.

A significant winter storm with heavy snow impacted all of north central Kansas and south central Nebraska early Monday morning, January 25th, with snow accumulations of six to eight inches reported throughout the area. In some areas, wind gusts were clocked at 30 to 35 m.p.h. resulting in blowing and drifting snow, and near blizzard conditions at times. With the correct spelling of the word “podium,” Jalia Creighton became the 2021 Stockton Grade School Spelling Champion on Wednesday, January 20th. Jalia, as well as Cheyenne Hoeting, Pierce Gray and Bodye Stithem will now represent Stockton at the Rooks County Spelling Bee to be held in Palco. Blaire Beougher will serve as alternate.

Stockton Electric Department Supervisor Jeff Scott was at the regular meeting of the Stockton City Commission, which was held on Tuesday, January 19. Scott was present to ask the commissioners to move ahead with the purchase of a four-wheel drive pickup in the amount of $30,000.00 to replace the 2000 model the department is now using. Since the electric department is part of a large cooperative, the Transmission Congestion Right Fund (TCR), Scott would like to utilize some of the money in that account to purchase the vehicle. The commissioners approved the purchase noting that 100% of the cost would come out of the TCR fund. The old vehicle will be put on Purple Wave to be sold.

Beginning on Friday, January 29, until the end of the winter activities regular season this school year, a maximum of four spectators per participant will be permitted to attend events with appropriate social distancing required. This ruling was approved on Wednesday, January 20, when the Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors met at the request of the KSHSAA Executive Board to discuss spectator limits for the winter activity season.

With cases of COVID-19 still on the rise, Rooks County has received its first doses of the COVID vaccine that are not earmarked for health care workers. The Rooks County Health Department, Rooks County Health Center, and Post Rock Family Medicine clinic have partnered to begin administering the vaccines as early as this week.

The sale of the business was finalized during the last week of December.
