WHAT MAKES GRACE SO AMAZING? The old hymn is among the best known. In fact, many can sing the first verse from memory—"Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see." But it's one thing to sing the song. It's a totally different thing to have a Biblical understanding as to WHY God's grace is so amazing! (1) God's grace is amazing because it is gained totally apart from the law. In other words, it has nothing to do with our working for it. We know this because God "saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy" (Titus 3:5). We know that "no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law” (Gal. 2:16). And we know that eternal life is "by grace" because it's "the gift of God" and therefore "not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Eph. 2:8-9). The world says, "Good things come to those who work hard." God says, "Good things (His saving grace) will never come to those who work, no matter how hard." (2) God's grace is also amazing because He gives saving grace regardless of merit. No matter what you've done in life, no matter how deep into sin you have sunk, no matter how vomitous your life has been, no one is beyond the reach of God's amazing grace. God tells us, "where sin abounded, (His) grace superabounded" (Rom. 5:20). As huge and widespread as the flood of sin might be in a life, God's amazing and loving grace totally and eternally abates that flood. No sin has ever or could ever be committed that God's grace cannot forgive—except the sin of rejecting His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus truly is the "Rock of Ages" whose dying grace can make even the foulest clean, if they humbly plead, "Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die."
