Lieutenant governor meets with city commissioner Bob Becker

Body
Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce for the State of Kansas, David Toland, came to Stockton on Friday, Oct. 29, and met with Stockton City Commissioner Bob Becker at the city office. Toland had met Becker in Topeka about two years ago when a delegation from Stockton was at the state capitol for an annual conference with state leaders from various offices. On Friday, the two talked about housing in Stockton, as well as the new Solomon Valley Manor, new businesses and restaurants in town, the lack of workforce, and the City’s work relationship with prisoners at the Stockton Correctional Facility. Toland was excited to hear about the new Solomon Valley Manor, and although he doesn’t know if he would be able to attend, he would certainly like to be invited to return to Stockton for the ribbon-cutting ceremony when the new facility opens. Becker presented the lieutenant governor a “Stocktonopoly” game in appreciation and remembrance of the meeting.
KANSAS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR David Toland met with Stockton City Commissioner Bob Becker and visited about good things happening in Stockton.

Names on the Wall

Body
Reader’s advisory! Sometimes, in doing the research for these biographical sketches, little information can be found. George Carter is a case in point. No matter how many times or how many permutations and variations of Mr. Carter’s name I punched into Ancestry. com and other less remote sources of information, the only confirmed date is that of his death and how he died in Rooks County. Given the paucity of such information (including date of birth, parents, and details of his service during the Civil War), I decided to go the dramatic route on this one. Furthermore the newspapers of the time, specifically The Russell Record (Russell, Kansas), The Western News (Stockton, Kansas), and The Stockton Review and Rooks County Record (Stockton), tell much of his story in their own unique styles and are quoted here. Finally, this biographical sketch comes with a warning: There are some graphic details here. Reader’s discretion is advised.

Change your clock, change your battery

Body
On average, families have less than three minutes from the time the first smoke alarm sounds to escape a fire. Working smoke alarms provide the early warning and critical extra seconds needed to escape and cut the risk of dying in home fire structures in half. When you set your clock back on November 6th, use the extra hour to make a life-saving change in your household— change and test the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors—and remind your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. This simple act takes just a moment, but it is the best defense your family has against the devastating effects of a home fire. This reminder to Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery® comes from Energizer, your local fire department and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Quiet Halloween in Stockton

Body
This year Halloween was a quiet one with lots of trick-or-treaters out and about getting their bags filled with candy around the neighborhoods in Stockton. Other than the usual smashed pumpkins, no tricks materialized throughout the evening hours.
