When a lure drops below the water’s surface, it’s not always known what might rise to meet it. On a warm night late last month, one angler fishing the Neosho River east of Parsons caught something he probably never expected to see—a four and a half-foot, 39.5- pound Alligator Gar. The kicker? Alligator Gar aren’t native to Kansas and have never been documented here.

Body
Rooks County Commissioners John Ruder, Greg Balthazor and Tim Berland met with road and bridge supervisor Rich Bouchey during their weekly meeting held on Tuesday, October 12th. Bouchey presented the commissioners with a contract from Training and Consulting Services of Olathe in the amount of $2,100.00 dealing with spill prevention, and a control and counter measures plans for the oil tanks at the County’s shop. This was approved as presented. Bouchey then informed the commissioners that a part was put together wrong on the oil distributor while it was being repaired in Topeka. The distributor is now back at the shop and the department is doing prep work for the Plainville Township Lake Road. Oil is to be delivered to the facility later in the week. At this time there are three mowers in the shop for repairs work. People have been picking up the equipment they purchased during the Purple Wave Auction the department recently held. The crew is hauling rock on B Road at this time between 29 and 30 Roads. The crew will then be gearing up to move over to 17 Road and W Road. Commissioner Balthazor informed Bouchey about some calls he had received dealing with road concerns on Q Road between 14 and 16 Roads, the State Lake Road and 2 Road. Then the commissioners and Bouchey talked about equipment for the department, as well as the equipment that is now in the shop for repairs, which includes three of the county mowers.
