Fall is absolutely my favorite time of year and it rushes by much too fast. The colors out in nature are spectacular. The trees turning, many different grasses, milo and corn fields, pumpkins and best of all the sumac. I gather some every fall but the sumac leaves drop so quickly.

Auto-correct at work once again

Body
Computers and all the amenities that go with them can be great. However, there are times they actually can cause issues. Such was the case in last week’s election story naming the USD No. 271 Board of Education candidates. In the article, the names of BJ Hoeting and Daphne Plumer (yes, as the names were just now typed, they auto-corrected again to “Hosting” and “Plumerias,”) were incorrectly spelled due to auto-correct...and poor proofreading. We sincerely apologize for this error, and will attempt to do better next time.

Anyone who has been married knows that this union between a man and a woman is not easy. A marriage takes a lot of work, understanding, forgiveness, grace, and most importantly, love. Without love, a marriage will never be what God intended when he made man and woman for each other.

DUPED. Have you ever been duped? The old saying is, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." I once gave money to a guy after a lengthy sob story. It was later that I realized his story didn't add up. Yup. I was duped. Sadly, there are many, even in the realm of religion, that prey on others and dupe them for financial gain. A little over 500 years ago, dirt poor peasants were gamed by the promise of buying the souls of loved ones from torment. An old poem, in part, says, "I have poor in my parish who need some relief—I preach to their poverty, pray for their grief; I send my box round to them, morning and night, And hope they’ll remember “the poor widow’s mite.” The motivation for Martin Luther posting his "95 Theses" on October 31, 1517, was the issue of the church selling appallingly spurious promises to the poor and all for the sake of funding a building project. It's no different today. Many (most?) of the TV preachers are scammers. I'm not into rap, but one rap song I heard about targets false teachers who proclaim "the gospel of prosperity." The song says, "The pastors speak bogus statements, financially motivated" and asks, "How can they not be convicted? treating Jesus as a lottery ticket." The song mentions 12 TV preachers by name calling them "false teachers," and says, "I know they're popular but don't let them deceive ya" and "Use your discernment, let the Bible lead ya." To be sure, there are many "wolves" who base their ministries on fleecing the "sheep." And their promises of health and wealth in exchange for your donation are just as appallingly spurious. Jesus rebuked the hypocrite scribes and Pharisees who "devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers" (Matt. 23:14). And God tells us "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Tim. 6:10). If you need help, look to Jesus in His Word and find infinite soul-wealth in Him! He's the real deal!
