God uses messed up people. Do you find that statement to be curious, or even wrong? If so, you might want to spend some time in the New Testament reading the many writings of Paul. His story is one of being on the wrong side and then turning to become an apostle known for spreading the teachings of Jesus.

A STIFF-NECKED PEOPLE. That's the summary of God's covenant people, the Jews, by Moses. God had called Moses to come up Mt. Sinai to receive instruction for Israel and he stayed for 40 days and 40 nights (Exodus 24). At the end of that time, God gave Moses the two tablets of stone on which He had written the 10 Commandments. However, upon descending Mt. Sinai, Moses found that his brother, Aaron, had made a golden calf for the people to worship and they were also involved in drunken immorality. (Ex. 32:6; 1 Cor. 10:7-8). God called Moses back up Mt. Sinai and while there, he pled for God to be merciful and gracious "even though we are a stiff-necked people" (Ex. 34:9). These Jews had seen the plagues that destroyed Egypt and had seen Pharaoh and his army drowned by God in the Red Sea, yet they quickly stiffened their necks in rebellion against God. Through my study of God's Word over the past weeks, one truth that has especially been impressed on my mind is the utter sinfulness and stiff-necked rebelliousness of the human nature. Another example is that during the end times, as seen in Revelation 6, the Lord Jesus Christ will judge mankind for their rejection of Him as Lord and Savior. The setting at that future time will be that the Lord causes onefourth of the world's population to be killed, the stars to fall from the sky, and a great earthquake to move mountains and islands out of their places. However, rather than humbling themselves and savingly trusting Him, the people of that day will cry out to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!" In other words, they will know that Jesus is causing the catastrophic events and that He is the Lamb (the Savior), but they would rather die than trust Him. Incredible! The sin nature in the hearts of people is just as stiffnecked today. Thankfully, His grace is still sufficient to save!
