Kathy Creighton and her 15-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer, KC, participated in Agility at the Rooks County Free Fair on July 23, 2022. In Agility I on lead, they received a score of 198 out of a possible 200, winning themselves Grand Champion, a blue ribbon, a trophy sponsored by Heritage Insurance Group, and a Reserve Champion ribbon, and a trophy in memory of Taz and Spike, which was sponsored by Kathy. In Agility I they won a red ribbon, Agility II a white ribbon, overall high score of all the Agilities, and a trophy in memory of Kate, Harley, Maggie, Taz and Spike, also sponsored by Kathy. Then, on August 8, 2022, KC and Kathy received a blue ribbon in Pre-Novice Obedience, a blue in Adult Showmanship with a score of 99 out of 100, and a purple Grand Champion overall in Showmanship. They are already thinking about next year!

CARD OF THANKS I would like to thank everyone for all the cards and well wishes I received for my 85th birthday. I enjoyed going through them all and remembering how our paths have crossed.

COMMERCE BANK representative Steve Hallier presented John (left) and James Berkley with their 50 years in banking awards on Monday, August 15th. John began his banking career in December 1971 after graduating from Kansas University that same month. He retired as bank president on April 1st, 2007. James began his banking career in 1972 after getting his BS in business from Kansas University. He retired as bank chairman in February of 2016.

OLD SCHOOL. Quote: 'Everyone who has a thorough knowledge of the Bible may truly be called educated; and no other learning or culture, no matter how extensive or elegant, can, among Europeans and Americans, form a proper substitute. Western civilisation [sic] is founded upon the Bible; our ideas, our wisdom, our philosophy, our literature, our art, our ideals, come more from the Bible than from all other books put together. It is a revelation of divinity and of humanity; it contains the loftiest religious aspiration along with a candid representation of all that is earthly, sensual and devilish. I thoroughly believe in a university education for both men and women; but I believe a knowledge of the Bible without a college course is more valuable than a college course without the Bible.' Now that's old school thinking! In fact, it was published in 1922 by William Phelps, a Professor of English Literature at Yale University. Yes...at Yale! Even Wikipedia says, his courses 'became the most popular and well attended on campus.' My how our world has changed! Can you imagine students in 2022 at Yale, or any secular campus, flocking to classes taught by someone like Professor Phelps? One hundred years sure makes a difference. Thankfully, though, the Bible is still the same book in 2022 as it was in 1922. In other words, the Bible IS 'old school'—but never out of date. And knowing the Bible, God's Truth, is still more valuable that any college course without the Bible. Jesus Himself, said, 'Your word is truth' (John 17:17). And He told His disciples that 'the truth will make you free' (John 8:32). As school begins again, yes, it's time for parents to 'parent up' and help teach children their math facts, spelling words, etc., etc. But even more vital is 'diligently' teaching them God's Word (Deut. 6:7). By God's grace, learning, loving, and living His Word will lead them not only to eternal life, but to true joy in this life.

THE STOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023 kicked off their last first day of high school in a way they will always remember. The group of 13 began the morning with a Senior Sunrise at the Stockton Cemetery where they paid tribute to their late classmate, Trey Wallace (courtesy photo on the right), who passed away on September 1, 2019. The class then headed to the front lawn of the high school where they enjoyed a breakfast tailgate, complete with music and maybe a little dancing! First day of classes for the Stockton students was August 19.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK) has been awarded $150,000 through the Community Service Tax Credit Grant program at the 50-percent rate through the Kan-community sas Department of Commerce. There were 55 applications of which 29 were awarded with a total of $4,084,455.75. One million of that amount went to childcare projects. The tax credits are available to donors on a first come, first served basis and are expected to go quickly.

We have lots going on in the world of medicine right now, including changes in CDC policy about Covid-19 and Monkey Pox. So, let’s dip our toe in the waters of these medical issues! Monkey Pox seems like an infection that isn’t real for us in Kansas, as we only have three cases in the entire state.
