Average gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 21.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.11/g today, according to Gas-Buddy's survey of 1,329 stations in Kansas. Prices in Kansas are 65.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 34.9 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 34.0 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $4.951 per gallon.

Wichita man faces six criminal charges after Stockton arrest

A Wichita man is behind bars on a $100,000 bond after he was arrested in Stockton on February 25, 2026, setting off a chain of criminal charges that would follow in Rooks County District Court. Eric Lafayette Stewart, 28, now faces six charges filed in Rooks County District Court on March 11, stemming from a Probable Cause/ Arrest Report submitted just two days after his arrest.

County-wide burn ban in effect

A special session was called by the Rooks County Commission on Thursday, March 12th, for the purpose of issuing a county-wide burn ban effective from 8:15 a.m. on Thursday morning, March 12th to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 17th, due to the high winds, low humidity, and no rain in the forecast. The Resolution will be posted on the County’s website.

Deer-related vehicle accidents highlight safety precautions in Rooks County

A recent series of vehicle accidents in Rooks County has underscored the persistent hazards posed by deer on local roadways. Over a span of three weeks in February, four separate incidents occurred in which deer entered the path of oncoming vehicles, resulting in significant vehicle damage and, in one case, driver injury. Notably, two of the four accidents occurred on US Highway 183 near K Terrace, south of Stockton, highlighting this stretch as a particularly hot spot for deer activity. Thanks to the prompt actions of motorists and consistent use of seatbelts, most individuals involved escaped unharmed, demonstrating the importance of vigilance and proper safety measures when encountering wildlife on rural highways.
