The 2026 Rooks County Free Fair is in full swing, and there is still plenty of excitement ahead for families and fairgoers to enjoy throughout the remainder of the week.

Chief District Judge Curtis Brown of the 23rd Judicial District, which includes Ellis, Gove, Rooks, and Trego counties, has been appointed to the Judicial Education Advisory Committee. His term will run through June 30, 2029.

As is our custom, the Sentinel will publish on Tuesday, August 4, instead of Wednesday, August 5, during Fair Week, which this year runs from August 4th through August 9th. Postal patrons will get their newspapers a day early, and the paper will hit the newsstands on Tuesday morning.

The Plainville City Council met on Tuesday, July 21st, beginning with the approval of the Consent Agenda. Included were the July 7th minutes, the bills paid for $220,789.42, and the change order for Phase 1 for $17,792.95.

The Rooks County Republican Central Committee held a forum for the four candidates running for the Rooks County District 1 Commission seat before the Primary Election on Thursday, July 23rd, at Stockton City Hall.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started work on the first of two highway resurfacing projects in Rooks County. Crews are currently completing a surface recycle and chip seal on approximately 18 miles of U.S.

Rooks County emergency responders have faced an increase in dramatic and unusual incidents in recent weeks. From sudden deer crossings and unexpected collisions to a passenger being thrown from a moving truck, local roads have become increasingly hazardous, keeping first responders on high alert.

The countdown is on for one of Rooks County's favorite summer traditions as the Rooks County Free Fair returns August 3-9, offering a full week of exhibits, entertainment, racing, carnival rides, music, food, and family activities.

As we approach the Tuesday, August 4th primary election, the race for the Rooks County District 1 Commission position has become a competitive contest with four individuals stepping forward to seek your support.

Rooks County voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 4, to cast ballots in the 2026 Primary Election.
