Names on the Wall

Body
Please note the “early” birthdate of this week’s Civil War veteran. Like Amos Earlywine, Jacob Boyer was born in the 1820s. What is remarkable about this particular time the United States Constitution was adopted in 1789 (approximately 30 years earlier) and the War of 1812, the “second war for independence,” ended in 1815. The birthdates of these Civil War veterans were closer to the founding of the nation than to the Civil War. They had children who survived beyond World War II. For a history person, this is something to contemplate.

National Heritage Area designation information given at regular weekly county meeting

Body
The Rooks County Commissioners again discussed the National Heritage Area designation at their regular weekly meeting held on Tuesday, April 13th. Dennis Dryden was also present to ask some questions about the meeting commissioner Tim Berland had attended last week about the designation. The speaker at the meeting had talked about the steps Colorado went through to stop the National Heritage Area designation in their state. Berland stated his personal view, which was he did not see any good in it for the landowners. There was a resolution draft that was presented at the meeting with Berland stating that they need to get enough counties together to sign a resolution opposing the 49-county designation, which encompasses counties in both Kansas and Nebraska. Commissioner John Ruder said he had not heard back from the Kansas Association of Counties (KAC) after sending them the information the commissioners at garnered at this time, but he will follow up with another email to the organization. Dryden presented letter drafts he had received at the meeting held last week, which is for individuals who oppose the establishment of the National Heritage Area. These form letters can be sent to the Heritage Partnership Program and to Professor Kim Wilson. Another informational meeting about the NHA designation was scheduled at Wakeeney. The commissioners will look into drafting a resolution and calling surrounding counties to get their information and thoughts on this issue.
