For the 28th year, the Stockton Sentinel announces it’s time to choose your favorite family photo to be included in our special Christmas feature, Santa’s ‘Deer Ones. The Santa’s ‘Deer Ones photo submission form can be found in this issue to help the process run more smoothly for the elves that help put the edition together at the Stockton Sentinel.

Last Tuesday's General Election vote totals

All local races were uncontested in last Tuesday's General Election. However, the ballot for Rooks County voters included a question on the 0% Food Rule, which determined whether the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink in Rooks County be allowed in Public Places without a requirement that any portion of their gross receipts be from sales of food.

Batista denied parole; eligible again in 2025

Body
Raul Batista was considered for parole back in September, but the Prisoner Review Board recently denied it. Batista, who was convicted of Aggravated Escape from Custody, Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Rape and Aggravated Battery of a local resident back in 1989, will be eligible for parole again on October 1, 2025.

Local veterans honored at school program

Our local veterans were honored with a Veterans Day Program at Stockton High School on Monday morning, November 11th. Family, friends, students, and the community began the event by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and then remained standing as teacher Shane Austin played the National Anthem on his violin.

A new federal rule that went into effect on January 1st, 2024, requires some small business owners to file a report regarding ownership information by December 31st, 2024. What is it? The Corporate Transparency Act Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting, or BOI for short, requires some businesses to report information about company ownership to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). According to FinCEN, the new rule is designed to “curb illicit finance activities potentially related to crimes such as money laundering, drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism.”

Westbound I-70 closed at Colby

The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed westbound I-70 at Colby because of winter weather conditions in Colorado and limited truck parking availability in northwest Kansas.

Westbound U.S. 36 is also closed at St. Francis.

Motorists are advised to buckle up and stay alert for changing road and weather conditions.

Smithfield representatives give presentation at county meeting

The courtroom was the location of the Rooks County Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 29th, with four representatives: Jimmy Hargrove, board stud supervisor; Kent Gray, geneticist; Conley Nelson, Midwest General Manager; and Al Witt, land nutrient manager from Smithfield Farms; were in attendance to give a presentation of their plans for a boar stud farm in Rooks County.
