Visitor Center reopening at Nicodemus National Historic Site

Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, Nicodemus National Historic Site is increasing recreational access. The National Park Service (NPS) has been working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rooks County continues to see a decrease in new COVID-19 cases throughout the county. This week, the absenteeism rate is at 0.3% above the baseline from 2019-2020. The positive testing rate is at 9.3% this week. Rooks County continues to receive weekly allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine and will follow the Kansas Vaccination Phases.

Three Plainville teams compete in Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge

Three teams were able to compete in this year’s Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) hosted by Rooks County E-Community and Economic Development on Wednesday, March 3rd. After having to compete virtually last year, it was good to have the teams meet personally with the judges and the competition open to the public.

City commissioners receive building update from SVM Administrator Amanda Atkisson

At the regular meeting of the Stockton City Commission held on Tuesday, March 2nd Solomon Valley Manor Administrator Amanda Atkisson was present to give the commissioners an update about the new facility project. She presented them with a copy of the timeline, which shows the different phases for the construction from Parkway Construction. Land surveyors have been at the site with Atkisson showing the commissioners a proposed outline of where the building will be located on the property. Even with a loan already secured for the project, Atkisson will begin the process of utilizing local and regional grant opportunities and donations to offset some of the costs. She will be applying for the Tax Credit application, as well as starting an initiative with the SVM employees as an investment in their new facility. Commissioners Nathan Glendening and Bob Becker will now be part of the planning committee and will sit in on the bi-monthly meetings with Parkway Construction as the project moves forward.

School Board hires Lindsey Mongeau as new district secretary

At the end of the Stockton USD No. 271 Board of Education meeting held on Monday, March 1st, the members present voted to hire Lindsey Mongeau as the district office secretary to replace Leslie Knoll, and to hire Christopher Nemeth as a full time custodian. They also voted to contract Justin Basart as a high school assistant track coach. Resignations accepted were Leslie Knoll as the district office secretary, and Bobbie Basart and Daneen Keller as high school spirit squad coaches.

Do you want to get more involved in your community? If so, the City of Stockton has a number of positions open for various boards and commissions in the city to choose from. At this time there are three open positions on the Planning Commission, two open positions on the Zoning Appeals Board, one open position on the Gift Funds Advisory Board, one open position on the Valley View Housing Authority Board, one open position on the City Tree Board, and three open positions on the Stockton Public Library Board.

Two grass fires last week

The Stockton Fire Department received two calls last week, both for grass fires. The first call came on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:20 a.m. for a grass fire at Maddy’s Corner (17 Road) south of town by the old airport. Ground hay had caught on fire and was quickly extinguished by the volunteers.
