School board moves to masks recommended for the remainder of the year

At the regular monthly meeting of the Stockton USD 271 Board of Education held on Tuesday, April 6th, the members voted to stop temperature checks and move to masks recommended except as required by KSHSAA, travel outside the District or if there is a positive case at the school. The schools will continue all other COVID-19 protocols, hand washing, social distancing and stable group for the remainder of the year.

Kansas pauses administration of Johnson & Johnson vaccine

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced Tuesday, April 13th, that Kansas will pause administration of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine following an announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this morning. There are reports of six recipients in the United States who developed a rare disorder involving blood clots within about two weeks of vaccination. No known cases have been reported in Kansas to date.

School board votes masks recommended but not required

During the regular USD 271 Board of Education meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6th, the school board voted in favor of "masks recommended, except as required by KSHSAA, travel outside the district or if we have a case at school. We would continue all other protocols, hand washing, social distancing and stable groups." Temperatures will no longer be taken upon arrival in the building.

Heath Latham to be promoted to full professor

Heath Latham, MD, Associate Professor for the Department of Internal Medicine at the KU Medical Center, was officially notified on Thursday, April 1st by Executive Vice Chancellor Robert D. Simari, MD, that Latham’s promotion to Professor had been approved by Chancellor Girod. The action will take effect on Thursday, July 1st.

Teachers Jennifer Kesler and Shane Austin recognized as the District’s Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees

Jennifer Kesler, second grade teacher at Stockton Grade School, and Shane Austin, Agriculture Education at Stockton, were the District’s Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY) nominees from USD 271 for Region 1. Each school district nominates one elementary classroom teacher and one secondary classroom teacher for this honor. A nominee must be a full-time classroom teacher in any state-approved or accredited school, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, who is planning to continue in an active teaching status. The teacher must have completed a minimum of five years as a classroom teacher and be committed to serving as a leader in efforts to improve schools, student performance and the teaching profession in Kansas.

Two Kansas trails receive national designations

Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism’s (KDWPT) Flint Hills Trail and Prairie Spirit Trail state parks recently received America’s highest trails honor when they were designated National Recreational Trails by the National Park Service. Both state park trails are operated by KDWPT’s Parks Division.
