NO JOKE. Hell is serious business. Jesus thought so. That's why He left the eternal, sinless glories of heaven to enter the temporal, sin-laden sphere of humanity. It's why Jesus willingly suffered all of His Father's righteous wrath toward the enormity of mankind's sin. Isaiah prophesied, "Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him (Jesus); he (God) has put him (Jesus) to grief" (53:10). Yes, the Father sent the Lord Jesus to offer His very life to assuage God's wrath toward sin. My sin. Your sin. Hell is no joke. Just two days before His crucifixion, Jesus pulled the curtain back and gave His disciples a glimpse into eternity. It was vital that the disciples knew the truth since they would soon be proclaiming the Good News to the world. So the Lord told them of a coming day of judgment saying, "When the Son of Man (Jesus) comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep (bonafide believers) on His right hand, but the goats (unbelievers) on the left. …Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels'" (Matt. 25:31-33, 41). The reality of hell is no joke. God created hell (Hades) as a place of temporary punishment for Satan and the other fallen angels. He also created the lake of fire of which the Apostle John writes, "Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire" (Rev. 20:14- 15). Yes, there is a second death—an eternal, spiritual "death" of suffering in the lake of fire—which follows physical death. The Good News? Those whose names are written in the Book of Life only die once. No joke!

“For this world is not our home; we are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven.” This verse from Hebrews 13:14 was our landing point for our final chapter study from The Story, a chronological book written as one continuing story of God and His people. We are reminded in this verse that our citizenship is not here on earth. Our citizenship is in heaven.
