JOHN BUNYAN (b.1620-d.1688). Though a tinker by trade, Bunyan was an English Puritan who spent most of his life as an itinerant preacher, pastor, and author. He is especially remembered for his allegory of the Christian life called "The Pilgrim's Progress." One of his many lesser known writings was entitled "A Few Sighs from Hell." This was an exposition on Luke 16:19-31 in which Jesus tells the fate of the rich man and Lazarus. Luke 16:24-25 says, "Then he (the rich man in hell) cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.'" Concerning this, Bunyan wrote, “The wicked's good things will shortly have an end; they will last no longer with them, than this life, or their lifetime. That scripture was not written in vain."
