BE SOBER. No, the Apostle Peter is not talking about drunkenness. But God did lead Peter to write, "Be sober, be vigilant (watchful); because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." The realization of Satan's efforts to lead souls into eternal judgment should be like strong, black coffee. It should wake us up to the possibility that some people claim to be followers of Jesus, but their faith is vain. God led the writer of Hebrews to put it this way, "Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God" (3:12). It's clear that this is addressed to those who are called "brethren." IOW, these people claimed to be Christians. However, these "Christians" were warned that it was possible some of them had "an evil heart of unbelief." The reality for some of them was that they were departing from worshiping God and from faith in Jesus Christ. That's pretty serious. That's reason to be sober-minded. God led the Apostle John to write, "...even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18). That might not mean much by itself, but John went on to say, "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us" (2:19). Why do some "Christians" seem to not really want anything to do with Christ or with living for things eternal? As a Bible-believing Christian, it's extremely concerning to have known people with whom we have worshiped the Lord in the past and hear they no longer believe the Bible is true, that God exists, that Jesus died to bear the sin of the world. Peter was right. Satan does continually seek to devour people. That's sobering. What's encouraging, though, is that "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life" (John 3:36).
