GOD IS BIGGER! We all have reasons to be anxious at times—financial needs, friction in relationships, health challenges. The list goes on. It was no different in Bible times. People have always had reasons to worry. But many have refused to fall prey to anxiousness, worry, fretting. Joseph certainly found himself in difficult circumstances. His brothers of a different mother sold him into a life of slavery and then duped dear ol' dad into thinking his favored son was dead. Down in Egypt, Joseph faced his new normal—new culture, new language, new everything. Yet Scripture gives no indication of Joseph being overwhelmed with anxiety. Why? Because he knew in his heart that "God meant it for good" (Gen. 50:20). In other words, God was bigger than his new normal and could be trusted! Another example? Consider the contrast between Elisha and his servant in 2 Kings 6. The king of Syria was bent on attacking Israel. He twice moved in his armies and encamped in a "unknown" location in Israel, but Elisha both times warned the king of Israel of their location. Finding out that the prophet Elisha was the culprit foiling his plans, the king of Syria sent his army, by the cover of night, to the city of Dothan to capture him. In the morning, Elisha's servant arose early and went outside and saw the predicament. Hurrying back inside, he exclaimed, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" (v. 15). Elisha calmly stated, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." He then prayed, "LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." What did the servant see? "And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha." What did the servant learn? God was bigger than his anxious fears! God's in control! The apostle Paul put it this way, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." GOD IS BIGGER!
