At the regular meeting of the Stockton City Commission held on Tuesday, May 4th, the commissioners met with Mike Rogers with the Stockton Food Pantry to discuss location ideas for the facility. With the summer construction time-period for the new Solomon Valley Manor building in Stockton, the organization will need to find a new location for the Food Pantry since at this time it is housed in the old Scout building, which will be taken down to make room for the new nursing home facility. Rogers proposed the idea of purchasing a 16x40 steel building to be set on City property north of the Stockton Recreation Center. He felt this would provide easy access for the public and a good place to unload freight. Anther option is to stay on the Manor’s lots and place the steel building on the old railroad right-ofway on the south end of Elm Street. A third option was to purchase a vacant building in the downtown area, with Rogers stating that the utilities would be too high and the buildings too large for the organization’s needs. Commissioner Bob Becker said he had heard that the Main Street Church parsonage might be available. Commissioner Nathan Glendening asked about funding and the time frame for when the Food Pantry needs to be out of the Scout house, with the timetable being July 1st. The commissioners ask Rogers to find out more about funding with the city to talk to SVM Administrator Amanda Atkisson about the location on the Manor’s grounds. More discussion will take place in the coming weeks about the location for the Food Pantry before any decision is made.
