BALLS AND STRIKES. The Lord Jesus was no doubt the most gracious man to ever walk this earth. Matthew said of Jesus, "A bruised reed He will not break" (12:20; a Messianic prophecy from Isaiah 42:3). The Apostle Paul spoke of "the meekness and gentleness of Christ" (2 Cor. 10:1). Jesus Himself stated, "I am gentle and lowly in heart" (Matt. 11:29). Though He created the universe, yet, in His humanity, He was meek and humble toward the humanity whom He came to serve. Despite that inner character, Jesus still "spoke truth to power." In other words, He spoke the truth to those in power, i.e. the proud, hypocritical spiritual leaders in Israel. And Jesus always called balls and strikes. Interestingly, even the best baseball umpires make bad calls about 14% of the time. And their bad calls tend to especially benefit high profile pitchers and hitters. However, the Lord Jesus never skewed the strike zone and never made a wrong call. After healing a demon-possessed man who was both blind and mute, the Pharisees said of Jesus, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons" (Matt. 12:24). Jesus responded, "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things" (Matt. 12:34-35). Umpire Jesus called, "STRIKE!" They couldn't deny Jesus' power to heal because the man could now see and talk. Yet they still linked Jesus to Satan. Why? Because their hearts were evil. They claimed to serve God, but they themselves were actually the ones who were blind and serving Satan. We need to ask, "How's MY heart? Am I blind, also? Am I actually serving Satan?" Our Umpire will speak the truth. But do we have ears to hear? Will we humbly act on the truth He speaks and bow our knee to Him, if that's our need?
