And So They Say

Body
Terry Odle: “After staying at the Hampton Inn in Hays for seven days, my room got sold out by accident. All the major motels sold out Memorial Day weekend. Stockton’s M Motel sold out due to the Youth Livestock Show. The Evergreen at Plainville sold out but forgot to change their vacancy sign. After contacting three more locations in Hays, I finally got a room at the Rodeway Inn.”

Commissioners receive update on county roads

Body
Road and bridge supervisor Rich Bouchey was present at the regular weekly meeting of the Rooks County Commission held on Tuesday, June 1st. After presenting the commissioners with the low fuel bid from Midland Marketing, Inc. in the amount of $14,385.00, they discussed the condition of the county roads. At this time barricades have been put up in several areas around the county with the crew working on the roads north of Codell at this time. The reclaimer is in the old Bell pit with the men packing material around some of the tubes. The department is waiting for the roads and materials to dry up so they can begin the storm/flood repair work on the roads. Most of the roads are passable at this time with approximately eleven roads marked as impassable. Commissioner John Ruder said he had received a call about having repair work done on AA Road before an upcoming wedding in that area. Bouchey said they would work on it later in the week. They also discussed the installation of an Ellis Trail sign in the county. AngelaBates had called the commissioners asking if the road department could install the sign in the same manner as Ellis County has done. Bouchey will contact Bates and coordinate with the Ellis County Department so that the sign can be installed later this month.

Memorial Day Visitors

Body
The Purdum household saw several visitors during the Memorial Day weekend. Willard and Tiffany arrived around noon on Saturday—early enough for Isabelle and Violet to take part in the Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest. Ellen, who had come in Friday, and Dad made a morning tour of the vendors fair on Main Street. Mid-afternoon, Ellen and Tiffany went to Hobby Lobby in Hays to get stuff for the upcoming anniversary reception. The family enjoyed a relaxing day on Sunday even if the weather didn't allow the granddaughters to go swimming as they had hoped to. Monday morning Walter Eades from Lyons, and Beth and George Jones from Tipton, joined the family at the traditional Memorial Day service in the Stockton Cemetery. Back at the house, lunch was prepared— burgers and hot dogs— before Willard, Tiffany and girls loaded the RV and started the return trip to Rock Springs, Wyo. Tuesday and Wednesday, Ellen and Dad took a quick trip to Seminole, Okla., to decorate family graves there. Back in Stockton, and after a day's rest, Ellen returned to Lubbock on Friday. Such family gatherings are always enjoyable, but normally too short and too far a part!
