I need to make a correction from last week’s news. Louise Smith was a Bartlett and not a Gravenhorst and a cousin of Georgia (Gravenhorst) Noble. Aneta Noble Boyle, of Wilson, gave me a mini-family history of her family.

A TALL ORDER. I don't know of any man who goes around crowing of being the best dad in the world. We all fall short. Exceedingly so, at times. That's just the honest truth. However, it could be worse. God could have chosen to not give us children to rear for Him. How thankful I am for God's amazing grace in giving two amazing boys to such an amazingly unworthy dad! The good news, though, is that God has given us in his Word the instruction of how to be the best we can be, despite our failures. Do you long to be a better dad (or mom for that matter)? One of the many keys to best parenting is found in God's exhortation to Israel when He said, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength" (Deut. 6:5). That's a tall order! I absolutely do deeply love my wife and our boys. But that's not the foundation to being the dad, or husband, that God wants me to be. Not even close. No, the real bedrock understructure to being a Godblessed dad is loving Him. Completely. Wholeheartedly. Unreservedly. In fact, Jesus quoted this verse and then stated, "This is the first and great commandment" (Matt. 22:38). In reality, loving God so committedly is impossible outside of His empowering grace through His indwelling Holy Spirit. No human effort on my part could ever bring about such love toward God. So the first step to earning the ribbon for being "the Best Dad" (I can be) is loving God. But it also requires me to love His Word, for God also told Israel, "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart" (Deut. 6:6). God's Word in my heart! Another tall order! Yet seemingly more doable than the first. But being "Best Dad" requires me to also live out the Word by teaching God's Word to our boys (even as adults) as I sit in the house, walk down the road, before bedtime, and when getting up in the morning (Deut. 6:7). Lord, help us dads to so love you!

You may be familiar with the well-known hymn, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. The hymn describes the joy, peace, and security the author, Elisha Hoffman, felt when leaning on the promises of God. If you assessed your foundation today, would you have those feelings?
