Sharing God’s Word with others is a privilege and a duty for all Christians. And, as we mentioned last week, God has given us unique gifts and talents. So what is hindering us if we have these unique gifts and talents and are commanded to spread the Word?

TWO THIEVES. There are multiple events in what we call the 'Passion Week' in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. And from those various events, there are many spiritual lessons to apply to our lives. One of those is found in Luke 23. God's Word says, 'There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left' (Luke 23:32-33). These criminals are also called thieves (Matt. 27:38; Mark 15:27). With Jesus in the middle, it almost seems to imply two different results for two different men with the results being based on their views of Jesus. Luke 23:39 says, 'Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, 'If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.'' The pride-filled, unrepentant criminal was repeatedly 'blaspheming' Jesus. Our 'blaspheme' is from the Greek Word, which means to defame, revile, slander, and rail against. IOW, he was mocking Jesus. He neither believed that Jesus was the Messiah nor that He could save them from physical death, let alone eternal death. His pride was on full display. However, Luke 23:40-41 says, 'But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, 'Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.'' The other thief had a fear of God, knowing he would soon give an account of his life to Him. He humbly admitted he was a sinner and deserved to die. And he also admitted the righteousness of Jesus. But beyond that, he said, 'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.' He knew Jesus was the Savior who could save him spiritually, so he said, 'Remember me.' And he realized Jesus was the true, eternal King of the Jews. We ask ourselves, 'Who is Jesus to me?'

Do people see Jesus in you? That is a fair question we should ask ourselves just as often as others. Sometimes we hesitate to take on the additional responsibilities of being a good Christian simply because of the expectations. No one ever said it was going to be easy to put the needs of others ahead of your own. But, fortunately for us, the hard work has already been done. First, we have to tap into God's power.

CORINTH. The rocky Acrocorinth mountain rose to some 1,800 feet above the city. On top was the Temple of Aphrodite, towering over the city below. As true of all ancient Greece, Corinth was greatly influenced by pagan, polytheistic beliefs. They worshiped many gods and goddesses, including Aphrodite, the goddess of love. However, their concept of love was nothing more than sinful lust. And their worship of Aphrodite emphasized unbridled temple prostitution. In other words, their culture was morally bankrupt. What’s fascinating is that God led the Apostle Paul to spend about 18 months in such a pagan city like Corinth. Even more fascinating is that Paul left pagan Corinth for equally pagan Ephesus, where he spent three more years. God obviously cared for pagans 2,000 years ago, and He still cares for them today. That’s why He led Paul to spend so much time among those who were so messed up in their belief systems. Although these ancient Greeks believed in immortality, they mostly rejected the physical resurrection of the body. That’s why the Apostle Paul so emphatically addressed the bodily resurrection of Jesus and true Christians in his first letter to the church in Corinth. Paul had spent 18 months carefully and ardently teaching and preaching the Gospel that Jesus died for our sins and conquered both Satan and death when He burst forth from the tomb. However, Paul was not blind to spiritual realities. He realized that some who claimed to leave their pagan beliefs for Jesus could well have “believed in vain” (15:2). That’s why he asked in 1 Corinthians 15:12, “Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?” We live in a time of growing paganism and are not much different than Corinth. Therefore, it’s incumbent on us who know Jesus Christ to emulate Paul by compassionately proclaiming His resurrection to those who need to hear.
