SHININGOURLIGHT. Imagine we serve under a maniacal, narcissistic king who rules over the world's most powerful kingdom. He wakes up one day and orders that a 90-foot-tall image of gold be constructed and erected on a large, open plain. This is more than just a new place for sightseers to visit. This is a place to gather together every government official throughout his empire, including us. So the king commands everyone to appear on a given day to dedicate the image. At this meeting, we must not only appear but also respond with allegiance and obedience to the command to 'fall down and worship the gold image.' This is exactly what King Nebuchadnezzar did, as recorded in Daniel 3. This was not only a test of loyalty to him but also of devotion to his God. William Paine wrote of our American Revolution, 'These are times that try men's souls.' The same was true for three young Messianic Jews named Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. Having been the only three refusing to bow before the image, they were given a second chance. If they gave obeisance, no problem. If not, they would burn to death in a furnace. The king arrogantly asked them, 'Who is the God who will deliver from my hands?' Their response is—'Our God whom we serve can deliver us...and He will.' And God did deliver them. So what can we today, learn? These men had resolute faith in and allegiance to the only true God. And faced with the choice to bow or burn, they unwaveringly chose to burn, leaving the result with God. After being set free alive from the furnace, Nebuchadnezzar said, 'Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego...because there is no other God who can deliver like this.' Jesus said in Matthew 5:15, 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.' People saw the unabashed faith of these men in God. How brightly does our faith shine?
