Ever since Adam's deliberate sin against God's one and only prohibition, all of humanity has been born with a sin nature and a natural inclination to sin and to rebel against our Creator. The well-known English pastor, Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), put it this way—“As the salt flavors every drop in the Atlantic, so does sin affect every atom of our nature. It is so sadly there, so abundantly there, that if you cannot detect it, you are deceived.” Being sinners at birth, plus choosing to sin in life, means all of us are under God's judgment. No matter our race, our religion, or our riches, we all are separated from our Creator with absolutely no way to restore the relationship that Adam severed. Sounds pretty hopeless, no? Well, it is a hopeless situation! Absolutely hopeless! However, that doesn't mean that we're without hope. The Apostle Paul tells us that our hope is a Person—"Christ Jesus our hope" (1 Tim. 1:1). God's eternal plan for humanity included sending His Son to be the One to stand between God and man. Being fully God, Jesus fully represents God's interests. Being fully man and providing Himself as a sinless sacrifice to satisfy God's wrath toward our sin, Jesus fully represents mankind's interests. In other words, Jesus is indeed "our hope" because He is our Mediator as Paul revealed, saying "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2: 5). Notice that God says through Paul there is ONLY ONE mediator—Christ Jesus. The writer of Hebrews revealed that, "He (Jesus) is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death." We all need a "go-between" —someone to go between us and God. Many people are concerned about their eternity, and rightly so. They wonder if they've been "good enough." They have no hope. If you're one of those people, let me encourage you to "Behold! The Lamb of God" (John 1:29) Who longs to be your Mediator!
