Body
HELL. It's probably not what many people want to think about. It's certainly much easier to just be busy about life than to be reminded that we're all only one heartbeat away from eternity. A 2003 Barna survey found that 71% of people believe in the existence of hell while only 1/2 of 1% believe they will go there. I personally find it interesting, though sad, that so many people talk so much about hell! What's even more interesting, sadly so, is that some religious leaders either deny the existence of hell or effectively deny it by teaching that nearly everyone goes to heaven. Some of the confusion about hell is due to misunderstanding the Hebrew and Greek words. The Hebrew word "sheol" basically refers to "the abode of the dead" (typically meaning the grave though also referring to life beyond the grave). The Greek word "hades" also refers to the grave. Acts 2:31 tells us "that he (Jesus) was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption (i.e., His body did not decay)." However, "hades" also refers to a place of torment. In Luke 16, Jesus gives the account of a "rich man" and a beggar named Lazarus. They both die and enter eternity. In Luke 16:22-23, Jesus said, "The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom." Clearly the dead rich man still had consciousness and could see. If you read the chapter, you'll see his torment was so great that he didn't want his brothers to join him in Hades. The Apostle Paul described the torment that all who reject Jesus Christ will suffer. This will happen "when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Thess. 1:7-9). The key to avoiding hell - "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Act 16:31).
