GOD RULES. The book of Daniel is popularly used as fun stories to tell children. The first six chapters focus on six historical events. The remaining six chapters are mostly prophetical. What a blessing it's been spending hundreds of hours over the past two months re-studying and chewing on these historical chapters! A major take-away is that this book is really not so much about Daniel and his friends. The real focus is the God of Daniel. Anyone who spends sufficient time in this book will come away with the reality that Daniel was absolutely and consistently faithful to Jehovah God - amongst a pagan people - in a pagan land - for over 70 years. What a challenge that is to anyone who claims Jesus as Savior! He never got snarky, never attacked others with foul words, never doubted God, etc. He certainly serves as a great role model for both young and old. However, the real treasure found in the book of Daniel is God Himself. He shows Himself to be the faithful God who is the Sovereign of the universe. In short, God rules! God ruled in delivering the 3 young men unharmed from the fiery furnace (ch. 3). God ruled in stopping the blasphemy of Belshazzar and ending his life and the Babylonian empire (ch. 5). And God ruled in keeping the lions from devouring Daniel when he was likely in his mid-80s. It was Darius, though, who really focused attention on God, declaring, "I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall endure to the end. He delivers and rescues" (6:26-27). Solomon is the one who said, "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD" ( Prov. 21:1). For us today, Putin is nothing more than a puppet in God's hand. Despite all his bluster, it is God who rules. Do you know Daniel's God? If so, take comfort, for He rules!
