JESUS WEPT. God tells us concerning the Lord Jesus, "Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, 'If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes'" (Luke 19:41-42). That day in the life of the Lord was His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. It apparently took place on the Sunday before His Friday crucifixion. Jesus wept over the city because He knew what the Romans would do less than 40 years later in AD 70. Luke recorded what Jesus said: "For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation" (19:43- 44). The Jewish historian, Josephus, confirmed that indeed the Romans built a wall around the whole city and starved the people to death. No wonder Jesus wept. However, far more exceedingly sad than the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple had to be the knowledge that nearly all the Jews were soon to reject Him as their promised Messiah, Savior, and King. The people would venomously screech, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" (23:21). No wonder Jesus wept. He had further reason to weep because this very day was prophesied by Daniel. Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 BC and Daniel prophesied that from the command to restore it (made by Artaxerxes on March 5, 444 BC) "until Messiah the Prince" (His Triumphal Entry on March 30, AD 33) would be 483 years or 173,880 days. Daniel also prophesied that after that day occurred, "Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself" (9:24-26). Israel should have been counting the days! But they didn't! No wonder Jesus wept. The question for us: "Is Jesus still weeping over those who reject Him?" More personally, "Is Jesus weeping for me?"
