New ‘Rock The Fair’ Battle of the Bands Announced

Musicians of all ages, genres and locales are invited to participate in the Kansas State Fair’s new battle of the bands event, “Rock the Fair.” The winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize, and the chance to perform as an opening act for a 2022 Nex-Tech Grandstand act.

Woodston Fire Department called out late Wednesday afternoon

The Woodston Fire Department was paged this Wednesday afternoon, at 5:36, for a fire on P Rd. (one mile east of 26 Rd) for a pickup and bales on fire.

Soon thereafter, Stockton Fire Department was called to bring a brush truck for assistance.

SHS National Honor Society holds Induction and Recognition Ceremony

The formation of the National Honor Society more than 95 years ago was regarded from its inception as a concrete way to promote high school academic standards, a means of ensuring the continuation of democracy, and an instrument for the betterment of the individual and the school. The Stockton Chapter of the National Honor Society was granted a charter on April 25th, 1960 and has been a part of the school system since that time.

Trooper seriously injured and fleeing driver killed in Saturday chase

A Saturday morning chase which lasted just over an hour through Norton County and eastern and southern Phillips County and into northern Rooks and Graham Counties Saturday resulted in two separate crashes—the first leaving a Kansas Highway Patrolman seriously injured—and the second, a Florida man dead.

Stockton Grade School attends MCEL Music Festival in Norton

The Stockton Grade School musicians attended the MCEL Music Festival in Norton on Wednesday, February 23rd. Receiving I Ratings for their vocal solos were Reese Taylor with a I Rating, Paytyn McNulty with a I Rating and Cheyenne Hoeting with a I-Rating. The remainder of the vocal solos ranked very high with the results as follows: Sierra Jackson, Brenna Odle and Skylar Amlong all received II+ Ratings with Mya Trevino, Shae Yohon, Ariel Sager, Pierce Gray, Isaac Thayer and Lincoln Keller all receiving II Ratings.

County commissioners discuss expanded duties for head custodian

Courthouse head custodian, Zach Brown, was at the meeting of the Rooks County Commission held on Tuesday, February 15th to discuss expanded duties/job description for his position. The expanded job description, in addition to Brown’s duties as the courthouse’s head custodian, would include being what is tentatively described as the County’s buildings maintenance supervisor. Brown would be the contact person for the other buildings owned by the County if any maintenance, repairs, etc. are needed. The commissioners and Brown are working on the details for the job description and title, as well as comparing wages for the additional responsibilities at this time.

CONSTRUCTION work for the new Solomon Valley Manor facility has been underway for the past few months. At this time footings are being poured and the plumbing lines are being laid with work on the water line almost completed. The next phase will include running the cement slabs and electrical lines.

City approves purchase of new trash truck

At the Stockton City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, February 15th, the commissioners voted to accept the salvage bid for the City’s trash truck that had been totaled in a rollover accident in January. They also voted to purchase a 2022 International trash truck in the amount of $179,000.00, financed through the Farmers National Bank. This decision was made after two executive sessions had been held with the commissioners, city employee Ray Niblock and city clerk Courtney Flower in attendance.
