Galyn Wayne Peterson, Stockton, passed away June 26, 2023, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville at the age of 90.

He was born on May 24, 1933, in Waterville, Kansas to Carl and Clara (Minge) Peterson. He married Christine Peterson on December 20, 1953, in Waterville. They were blessed with two sons, David Wayne and Gary Lee, and one stillborn daughter.

Joan Elizabeth Bates, of Wichita, passed away on June 24, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, at 71.

She was born on May 23, 1952, in Damar, Kansas, to Fredrick Edward and Bertha Blanche (Meanard) Knipp. She grew up in Damar and graduated from Damar High School in 1970. On May 14, 1977, she married Linden Duwana Bates at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.

Galyn Wayne Peterson, 90, Stockton, Kansas passed away on June 26, 2023, at Rooks County Health Center in Plainville.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 30, 2023, at Stockton United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be on Thursday, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.plumeroverlease.com

Ann Janelle Smith, of Abilene, Ks, died June 20, 2023 at Village Manor Nursing Home in Abilene, Kansas.

After graduation from Abilene High School, she attended Manhattan Bible College in Manhattan. She then completed her LPN certificate and spent ten years serving as a nurse in the medical clinic on the Indian Reservation east of Polson, Montana. On the death of her father, she returned to help her mother adjust and continued to live in Abilene. She became the dietician for the Dickinson County Jail. She served there for 27 years, until retirement.

Danny Thomas Houston passed away Friday, June 16, 2023, at his home in Plainville, at the age of 53.

He was born on May 10, 1970, to George Thomas and Tressia Mae (Gardner) Houston in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Danny grew up in Red Oak, Iowa and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1982. He was a police officer in Red Oak for many years.

He enjoyed rock and roll music and loved spending time with his family—especially his kids and grandkids.

Barbara “Barb” Jean Schindler, of Stockton, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, at the age of 77.

She was born on June 26, 1945, to Reuben V. and Neva G. (Hayes) Richardson in Norton, Kansas. Barb married Kermit Schindler on December 3, 1961, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. They later divorced. To this union were born three children: Neva, Kermit Jr., and Rena.

Mervin Randall “Merv” Hathaway, 92, formerly of Hudson, passed away May 25, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.

He was born September 29, 1930, in Stafford, to Elmer William and Dora Louise (Hart) Hathaway.

Merv attended school in Stafford and St. John. He served in the United States Army from 1948-1949, in the Army Reserve from 1949-1953, and in the United States Air Force from 1953-1961. Merv owned and operated a service station in Haysville and Hudson, but found his true passion as a drug and alcohol counselor for the Larned State Hospital.

Charles “Charlie” Raymond Velz, 50, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, after sustaining fatal injuries following a rollover accident. 

He was born November 9, 1972 in Plainville, Kansas to George and Lyndal (Hance) Velz. His father died when Charles was a young boy and he spent much of his teen years with his grandparents, Raymond and Christine Hance of rural Stockton. He was a 1992 graduate of Stockton High School.

Doris Jean Miller, 96, passed away on June 7, 2023, under Hospice care, and tended by her children and extended family, at SunPorch of Smith County in Smith Center, Kansas.

Jean was born on November 26, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa to C.J. and Elizabeth (Rietz) Hamer.

Jean attended schools in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating high school, Jean received a teaching contract at Bennett, Iowa on her sister Ruth's reputation. She taught 2nd Grade in Bennett, Iowa. Jean then attended two years at McPherson, Kansas, meeting a handsome young man from Burr Oak, Kansas.
