Area Fall Harvest Update

The farmers were back cutting the fall crops by the middle of last week, after the sun came out and dried out the wet fields. Since that time, the harvest for the bean crop is almost complete, with Stockton Farmers Union Elevator taking in 63,000 bushels and Woodston Coop taking in 52,000 bushels.

Lowell Township

Body
Whoever ordered this cloudy, foggy, drizzly weather has no idea what fall harvest needs. The moisture is good for the wheat planted, and the fall grasses and landscape color are beautiful. We made a quick decision Saturday morning to drive to Bennington for my niece Jordan Bartlett's Bulldog volleyball substate match against Inman, and we drove both there and back in the same foggy, misty conditions. More rain has fallen in that part of the state. Bennington had two and a half inches, Marion received over five inches, and we could see little 'lakes' and water setting between the rows of drilled wheat around Bennington. Since Friday, our gauge has had .80 and another .15 by this Sunday afternoon. We listened to the K-State-KU game until halftime. That would have been a great game to watch. Unfortunately, the Inman Teutons won over the Bennington Bulldogs. Jordan and eight FFA members were making the trip on Tuesday to attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. Jordan had a family cheering section show up to support her team. After the matches, six of us visited the Stillwagons to issue early birthday wishes to our brother Dale on his upcoming Halloween birthday on Friday. Daughter-in-law Michele Melton's Hillsboro volleyball team won its substate match against Sedgwick and will be going to state next weekend.
