Commissioners talk sick leave policy

At the regular meeting of the Rooks County Commission on Tuesday, May 2nd, clerk Laura Montgomery recommended the following for the sick leave usage within the County. Montgomery recommended continuing the $50.00 a day payout at the end of the year for accumulated sick leave with the employees able to carry over 720 hours and changing or adding that the employees are paid one-fourth of the accumulated sick leave they have at the regular hourly rate at their retirement.

City approves street closing at South Eight Street

At the Stockton City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, May 2nd, the commissioners received a request from the Rooks County Fair Board to close South Eighth Street through South Eleventh Street located near the Rooks County Fairgrounds for a solid surface area in anticipation of the carnival rides for the upcoming Rooks County Free Fair. The commissioners approved the request so work could begin on the solid surface.

Elda Hamit, 100 years young

It's not very often a community can boast of a centenarian living in its midst, but Stockton can do just that on May 17th...the special day when Elda Hamit reaches the 100 years young milestone! Elda Hamit was born at home in the farmhouse of her parents, Leo and Eva Elliott, in Torrington, Wyo., on May 17th, 1923. The Elliotts lived in Wyoming for the first two and a half years of Elda’s life before they moved back to Kansas to help on the farm after her grandfather died.
REACHING 100 YEARS OF AGE on Wedneday, May 17th, will be Stockton’s Elda Hamit.

Motion Dance Company does well at Regionals and sets their sights on Nationals!

The Motion Dance Company recently went to Kansas City, Mo., to perform their dances in the Regional competition on Wednesday, April 14th, through Friday, April 16th. They took 19 dances to Regionals and will also take 19 dances to Nationals! There are twelve members on the team. They are Claire Plumer (Stockton), Ella Snyder (Stockton), Mia Odle (Stockton), Lyric Snyder (Stockton), Saj Snyder (Stockton), Haddie Carpenter (Stockton), Serenity Carpenter (Stockton), Evelynn Hilbrink (Stockton), Ella Knowles (Phillipsburg), Ruthie Voss (Phillipsburg), Ryann Moffatt (Phillipsburg) and Miley Moffatt (Phillipsburg).

Search continues for missing Parsons man

LABETTE COUNTY—The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Labette County Sheriff’s Office continue searching for Dakota A. Patton, the 23-year-old man last seen the evening of April 25, in Parsons, Kansas. Foul play is suspected in Patton’s disappearance.

Commissioners hold several executive sessions

The Rooks County Commissioners met with sheriff Gary Knight at their weekly meeting on Tuesday, May 25th. Knight was present to ask for $3,000.00 for the D.A.R.E. program for the county schools. The commissioners approved the funds for the program as presented. Commissioner Kayla Hilbrink asked if Knight applies for grants or asks for any other monetary assistance for the program. Knight said they do not, but will look into what is available.
