Three generations of Stockton and rural mail carriers came to an end when Kim (Cadoret) French hung up her mailbag on Wednesday, May 31st, after 29 1/2 years of service. Her grandfather, Charlie Baxter, was a city and rural carrier during the 1940s, with her father, Joe, working as a rural carrier for many years.

Several filings for upcoming General Election Nov. 7th

There have been several candidates who have filed and whose names will appear on the ballot for the General School Election to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. For the Board of Education of Unified School District #271 (Stockton) for the four at-large positions, five have filed.

El Dorado Correctional Facility Resident Death

EL DORADO, Kansas—El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) resident Luis Diaz died at the facility on Sunday morning, June 4, 2023. The cause of death is pending further investigation and the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) custody, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI). The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commissioners speak with David Harper about property tax appraisals

At the Rooks County Commission meeting held on Tuesday, May 23rd, the commissioners had a speaker phone meeting with David Harper, the Kansas Director for Divisions of Property Values and Vehicles, regarding the County’s high tax appraisals this year. Harper recommended the commissioners keep updated on property sales, check to see how accurate the 2023 property values are, and meet with the appraiser so she can explain the appeals process to them.

World War II Veteran Kenneth Miller honored

Stockton’s Kenneth Miller, thought to be the oldest living World War II veteran in Rooks County, was honored by his peers, family, friends, and public officials at the Rooks County Historical Museum on Tuesday, May 23rd, with a flag presentation from United States Senator Jerry Moran.
FAMILY MEMBERS at the Flag Presentation for WWII Veteran Kenneth Miller were:Aaleyah Becker, Aidyen Kerr, Jesica Kerr, Kenneth Miller, Addie Foster, Senator Jerry Moran, Kacy Becker, Kaylyn Becker, and Ed Foster.

Self-reliance and responsibility focus of Memorial Day Speech

In his annual address during the Memorial Day services at the Stockton Cemetery on Monday, May 29th, veteran and VFW Post 8873 Quartermaster John Berkley spoke as follows: “Thank you for coming out to our Memorial Day Ceremonies. This is the day we recognize those who served to defend our country, and especially those who lost their lives doing so or were wounded in battle. While you are contemplating these sacrifices, give some thought about exactly what these men and women were serving to accomplish.
AS HAS BEEN THE CASE for many years, VFW Post 8873 member John Berkley gave his speech to a nice crowd who had gathered for the Memorial Day Service at the Stockton City Cemetery.

Short but productive City meeting

During her City Manager’s Report at the Stockton City Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 16th, Courtney Flower stated that the highway project on Main Street from Elm Street going east was reviewed by the State. The Department of Transportation also asked the City to discuss and gather suggestions for the bricked area of Main Street.
