PASSING IT ON. At the end of the 1970 cartoon film, 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town,' Fred Astaire narrates, asking, 'But what would happen if we all tried to be like Santa and learn to give as only he can give—of ourselves, our talents, our love, and our hearts. Maybe if we could all learn Santa's beautiful lesson, maybe there would finally be peace on Earth and Good Will toward man.' He then goes on to sing the title song. I'm sure that I watched this special as a kid, along with all the other Christmas specials. While the sentiment is well-meaning, the teaching is actually blasphemous. It's a cute song. But Santa is portrayed as having the nature of God Himself. First of all, Santa is nothing but a figment of man's imagination. Secondly, Santa is not omniscient (having all knowledge) - 'He sees you when you're sleeping, He knows when you're awake, He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake.' However, our Creator God knows all—past, present, and future. He also knows all that is possible and potential. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 15:3, saying, 'The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.'
